What I Want To Be, When I Grow Up
"What do you want to be when you grow up?"
Ahh, the timeless, age-old question typically asked to little ones in their formative years. But sometimes, when life is just a little too much, I like to sit back and imagine all the possibilities before me. And, today, I feel especially inspired to share these precocious ideas of mine. Thus, my top ten choices:
#10. Social Worker
Given that I'm in school to become a social worker, I figured that it's imperative the time and money being spent on this current pursuit be honored in the list. Unfortunately we're a week away from finals which makes it difficult to be enthusiastic about this endeavor...but I vaguely remember wanting to work with oppressed and marginalized communities in hopes of making the world a better place for everyone -- but now I just want to survive the remainder of the school year.
#9. Actress
I've never really been one for the Hollywood life, but you have to admit it would be really cool to act...I mean, as an actress, I could probably actually 'be' everything on this list. And maybe even get to hang out with LL Cool J. Yummy.
#8. Video Editing
If I had the brain of a techy, I'd love to make all those cool fluff videos they play before sports events or during news segments. You know, the ones with really inspiring stories, powerful music, and awesome footage. I'd love to create minute masterpieces that leave you begging for more. Good stuff.
#7. Cirque Star
I have loved Cirque du Soliel for years; the artistry and showmanship are absolutely unmatched. I mean, who doesn't want the ability to swing on a trapeze 30 feet above the audience or place their butt over their head or bounce on monster trampolines -- these things take courage and talent. And the costumes are out of this world awesome!
#6. Band Manager/Non-Profit Director
I don't know who this woman is...but I imagine that I am her -- and am just hanging with my boys, Ike, Tay, and Zacy, just like we've done for the last 16 years. I've watched them grow up, get married, have babies, and make musical strides, all the while our lifelong friendship has placed me in a unique position to take charge of their fan club and non-profit partnerships -- coordinating events, collaborations, and everything else that goes along with managing. Okay, so this is more of a fantasy than something that can actually be accomplished at this point...but, the thought makes me exceedingly happy.
#5. Undercover Prostitute/Human Weapon Warrior
I've probably lost you at this point, but sometimes, I think it would be really cool to train and train and train until you become this human weapon -- the ultimate warrior. Then, go undercover as a prostitute, a runaway, a buyer, a seller, whatever...then, take down 'Johns' (aka: pimps and very bad dudes). I mean, who doesn't want to get a phone call -- hundreds of Nigerian school girls have been abducted and are being trafficked, you've just been tasked with bringing them home. Oh. My. God. Or even stateside; I am so done with girls (and women) being priced and labeled as property, and what I would give to unleash hell on the men and women who engage in such atrocious affairs.
#4. Sports Psychologist
Okay, it's Game 5 of the 2010 World Series and The Freak is on the mound; he's a little antsy and is struggling to keep it in the zone so Bochy brings you out to talk him down. Or it's the women's team finals at the 2004 Olympic Games and Mighty Mo just got word that she's lead-off on beam, so you get to talk her in - 'see the beam, hit the beam.' Honestly, it doesn't matter the sport, or the arena, or the moment in time...just the opportunity to help athletes find the calm in their minds to be all that they've trained to be, would be priceless.
#3. Firefighter
This is a no-brainer. I mean, you drive an awesome truck, wear cool gear, do epically heroic things, and everyone (and their mother) loves you. And no one, I mean no one, can cook like a firehouse full of firefighters -- legitally the best food in the world.
#2.Lifeguard
And it wouldn't hurt to be an LA County Lifeguard either -- we all know Venice has the best lifeguards ;) But seriously, your office is the beach and your uniform is a bathing suit. You get to work with firefighters, paramedics, and the Coast Guard; all while swimming, paddling, boating, and saving lives. And who doesn't love wearing red.
#1. Surfer
If only...like an artist's brush to the canvas, so a surfer to the face of a wave--every carve or turn or air is merely a stroke of pure genius on the ocean canvas.
Well. There you have it.
What about you...what do you want to be, when you grow up?
